1. Color

Suitable Age: Kids younger than 4 years old

Get your toddlers occupied by letting them color without limits (yes, even outside the lines!).

Material You Can Use:

Coloring Books for Kids & Toddlers: Animals Coloring

Pros
  • Little kids love coloring and this will be an enjoyable activity for them.
  • It’s inexpensive.
Cons
  • Children might lose interest with this activity fairly quick.

2. Doodle

Suitable Age: 3 to 8 years old

Have lots of “doodle” fun making silly and funny rainbow-hued notes and drawings with these colorful scratch notes.

Material You Can Use:

Scratch Off Mini Notes + 2 Stylus Pens

Pros
  • The notes hold an element of surprise that will surely be a great hit to smaller children.
  • Kids will find it fun scratching the surface of these notes to uncover the rainbow colors underneath.
Cons
  • The children could go through them pretty fast (each box contains 150 notes) so you need to pair it with other indoor activities during long rainy days.

3. Bead The Day Out!

Suitable Age: Older children (works well with girls)

Allow your unruly bunch to find out the wonder (and fulfillment) of doing something productive with their hands by allowing them to discover the wonderful world of bead products making.

Material You Can Use:

Creative Kids Complete Photo Guide to Bead Crafts

Pros
  • Bead projects are time-consuming, the perfect way to let the hours slip away come long rainy days.
  • Uncover your kid’s creative side with this activity.
Cons
  • It can be tedious work especially for novices. Your kids might end up frustrated at first and you’ve got to have a lot of patient as the teacher/guide.

4. Try Your Hand At Bracelet Making

Suitable Age: Older kids

Entice your rowdy bunch to rein in the energy and channel it all to making bracelets in celebration of friendship. Yay!

Material You Can Use:

Leather Bracelets (Step-by-step instructions for 33 leather cuffs, bracelets and bangles with knots, beads, buttons and charms)

Pros
  • Older kids might find this project interesting given the fact that friendship bracelets are “in” right now. They can make their own bracelets and dole them out to their friends.
Cons
  • Like bead work, bracelet making can be a tedious project. Patience and a healthy dose of creativity is needed.

5. Do Creative Play With Clay

Suitable Age: From 3 years old and up

Indulge your little ones’ penchant for make-believe worlds (and things) through creative play with clay. Make up things (and characters!) as you go along.

Material You Can Use:

Play-Doh Modeling Compound 36-Pack Case of Colors

Pros
  • Every container of the 36-pack case contains clay of different colors that are non-toxic and safe for kids to play with.
  • Enhances your child’s creative side as playing with clay allows him the freedom to make whatever he wants to with his hands.
Cons
  • Some buyers complained about the pack not lasting long than they expected it to.

6. Movie Marathon!

Suitable Age: Best for all ages

Curl up in the family room, choose the movies (just make sure they’re age-appropriate) pop the biggest batch of popcorn and watch on. What’s not to love?

Pros
  • It’s, arguably, the easiest activity to cure rainy day jitters and boredom.
  • Movies have the ability to engage your children without you having had to take special participation. You can pop in a movie and let the children watch while you do some household chores.
Cons
  • Experts advise against letting kids have too much screen time. One movie is ideal, two are fine but four to six movies in one setting is too much for the kids.

7. Do Crayon Melt Projects Using A Hot Glue Gun Or A Hair Dryer

Suitable Age: 4 years old and up (but don’t let them do the activities without adult supervision)

Do crayon melting or dripping using a hot glue gun (take off the crayon’s paper covering and put it in the gun as you would a glue stick).

Or you can line up and hot glue a bunch of crayons at one end of a canvas and melt them using a hair dryer.

However, you can still crayon melting the old-fashioned way (my way was putting some crayon bits on a spoon and putting it over a lighted candle to melt before applying it on paper). The third one is the most ideal thing to do if you have small kids.

Material You Can Use:

Crayola Ultimate Crayon Collection, 152 Pieces

Pros
  • Kids love colors and doing these activities with crayons will surely be fun for them.
Cons
  • These projects can be very messy, so be ready. Additionally, the activities require heat application. Untoward accidents might happen.

8. Or Do The Crayon/Watercolor Resist

Suitable Age: 3-10 years old

Here’s a video to give you the idea how to do it:

Pros
  • Kids will find the technique amazing.
  • It can also be a learning time for children. You can explain to them why watercolors and crayons don’t mix.
Cons
  • These projects can be very messy, so be ready.

9. Gather And Recycle The Leftover Broken Crayons.

Suitable Age: 3 years old and up

After your crayon activities, gather any leftovers and repurpose them. You might end up having to do a coloring session once your kids see their “new” crayons.

Here’s how to do this:

Pros
  • It will instill the value of recycling and waste management to your kids. It can also be a learning time for them — allowing them to do the clean up after your crayon activities.
Cons
  • You might not be able to use the molds you used for the crayons for other things (like food) after.

10. Play Some Board Games

Suitable Age: 5 years old and up

Play classic Snakes and Ladders or Jenga. Harness word power with Boggle or Scrabble. Or you can find something new to play with your kids. Then, render creative punishments for laughs.

Material You Can Use:

Roll ‘n’ Spell Board Game

Pros
  • Board games allow for fun children-parent interaction. It’s a learning and bonding moment for the whole family.
Cons
  • Some kids (and parents!) lose interest with playing any board game easily.
